Born and raised in Geelong, Victoria, he joined the Australian Army in 1982 and received his Commission from Officer Cadet School in 1983.  His service experience includes Aviation Operations, Air Defence Artillery and Field & Medium Artillery, and, the Operational Deployment Force.  Robert’s subsequent postings include Adjutant, School of Artillery at North Head; Artillery Adviser, Army Battle Simulation Group, Georges Heights; Second in Command, Army Maritime School, Chowder Bay,  and, Staff Officer, Headquarters 2^nd Division Artillery.
